Explicit, Implicit, and Making Inferences CCSS RL 1: Cite strong and thorough textual evidence to support analysis of what the text says explicitly as well as inferences drawn from the text, including determining where the text leaves matters uncertain

Explicit Information Explicit information is any idea that is stated. With explicit information, you see the text explained! Since you are looking for explicit information in what is read, the explicit information will be written in the text. There is no need to look for clues. Just read. If the information is written, it is explicit.

Let’s practice! All living things are made up of cells. Since humans are alive, we are also made of cells. Cells make our body tissue. Tissue makes our body organs. Organs make our body systems. Cells are the building blocks of our bodies. Here are 2 explicit questions to answer: 1. What is the main idea of the article? 2. What makes up our body organs?

Implicit Information = Implied/ Not Stated Implicit information is NOT stated. To find implicit information, you will have to think about what it means to you. All of this is based on evidence. Implicit information is using what the information to make an inference. But what is an inference?

INFERENCES!!! An inference is a conclusion you reach after putting all the evidence together.

INFERENCES!!! An inference is a conclusion you reach after putting all the evidence together. It is individualized, which means it is based on what you know about the world. Inferences = evidence from text + background knowledge

HOW TO MAKE AN INFERENCE… 1. 2. 3. Read the text. Gather clues to find a personal conclusion about the reading. Ask yourself questions. (What is not being said? Why is this word used? ) ALERT: Sometimes the operations can go backwards. Sometimes there can be an inference given to you and you have to decide what clues were given for someone to have made that inference.
