Explanation Text – Lesson 6 Planning out your explanation text

Now, we are going to apply this learning to your contraption planning. • Use your knowledge and understanding of the explanation text toolkit to help you plan out the structure of your piece of writing. • You might do this very roughly on a piece of paper, showing what your piece of writing might look like. • Think about where you will put titles, headings and diagrams. • Will the headings be in a different font? • Will you use boxes for some parts of the explanation? • Will you need a glossary and what will it look like? • You do not need to include all the detail at the moment.

First of all, I am going to refer to my toolkit. • Aim: To plan and write an explanation text • My success criteria: • I will include a clear title • I will include a short introduction. • I will include a diagram. • I will include some boxes with additional information. • I will use technical language. • I will write it in the present tense. • I will include a glossary.

This is my example of what this plan might look like. My Title will go here: eg: “How the Car Cleaning Contraption works” Short introduction here – briefly saying what it is Diagram of the contraption here Main part of the explanation here – saying HOW it works Additional information box here - Safety tip Additional information Box 2 Glossary Conclusion – pulling the piece of writing together at the end
