The Aztec Empire The Aztec was a great civilisation that ruled Central America from the 14 th century until the 16 th century. The Capital and centre of the Aztec civilisation. Religion had a large influence on Aztec culture and on the Aztecs. The Fall of The Aztec empire was caused by the Spanish conquest led by Hernán Cortés.

Daily Life of an Aztec Citizen The average man went about his daily routine as if following a written script. Most men worked in agriculture and women stayed at home. Religious practices dominated the life of all Aztec citizens.
Education The Aztec Empire was one of the first civilisations to have compulsory education. It did not matter if you were a slave or a noble, everyone got an education. At 15 all boys and girls went to school. Boys and girls had separate curriculums. Boys were taught warfare and religion and girls were taught home skills such as cooking.
Society Aztec society was very independent and very organised. Society was organised into three classes. Education, religion and agriculture were very important in society. Society followed strict rules and placed harsh punishments if these rules were broken.
Classes in Society The three classes were nobility, commoners and slaves. Nobility included warriors, priests and royal members. The commoners made up the bulk of the population. The slaves consisted of enemy warriors, people who did not pay debts and criminals.
Role of Both Genders in Society Males were required to join the Aztec army at least once. The males usually work on the farms but sometimes worked in other jobs such as a tradesman. Females were expected to work at home and take care of the family. Women did not have significant roles in high society.

Religion Religion was the only purpose in a Aztec life. The Aztecs named and worshipped nearly 1000 Aztec gods. The Aztec Empire participated in several rituals to honour their gods. In order to please their gods they performed human sacrifices all year. They believed that there were 9 hells and 13 heavens.

The god Xiuhtecuhtli, the lord of fire. Tlaloc, god of rain, fertility, and water.
Economy Economically the society was dependent on agriculture and warfare. The cacao bean was one of the regular money used by the Aztecs. The other was quachtli; a type of cloth that the Aztecs really treasured. The Aztec economy was very simple and basic but it still supported the whole civilisation.
