Experiment 2 C Identifying Elements, Compounds and Mixtures
Testing a Liquid Boil the liquid and look for a residue after boiling. If a residue is present, the original sample was a_________ If no residue, the sample could have been a _________
NOTE: There are only two liquid elements at room temperature: Mercury and Bromine
Testing a Solid 1. Look for visual clues 2. Test with a magnet – If all magnetic, could be _____________ 3. If some magnetic and some not, could be _____________
There are no elements that are white crystals or powders!! I am NOT an element! Neither am I!
3. Try to dissolve sample in water 4. Filter. Look for a residue. Save the filtrate If a residue is found in the filter, there is a substance which doesn’t dissolve in water. Filtrate comes through the paper
5. Evaporate a small sample of the filtrate and look for another residue after evaporation If a residue is found in the test tube after evaporation, there must be a substance that DID dissolve in water. If no residue is found, then maybe nothing dissolved in the water.
If there was a residue in the paper, but not in the evaporated filtrate, then nothing dissolved. The sample could have been _____________________ If there was no residue in the paper, but a residue in the test-tube then all the sample dissolved. The sample could have been _____________________ If there is one residue in the paper and another residue in the test-tube, the original sample must have been a _______________
