A great land bargain brought the next big parcel of territory to the Americans. France under the ruler Napoleon owned the immense Louisiana Territory. Napoleon’s wars in Europe were costing vast amounts of money. Louisiana Purchase 1803 Land gained from Treaty of 1783 Original 13 Colonies 1776
U. S. Expansion * The French offered the territory for sale. *Thomas Jefferson, as President of the United States, offered France $15 million for it. *The French accepted this offer, which amounted to two or three cents an acre. With this purchase the United States doubled in size.
