What is an expanded noun phrase? If you can remember what an expanded noun phrase is then explain it to your parents before you reveal the answer. An expanded noun phrase is a noun and at least one adjective to describe that noun. This makes it a phrase E. g. noun – table, adjectives – strong, wooden Expanded noun phrase: The strong, wooden table
Why do we use expanded noun phrases? We use expanded noun phrases to make our writing more interesting. When writing if we don’t include any adjectives to describe our nouns it can be boring or difficult for the reader to create an image in their minds
Teacher example My noun is classroom My adjective is colourful The colourful classroom Adjective Noun

Challenge 1: Can you think of any adjectives to describe these nouns? chair dinner grass trees river London city school house friends Extra challenge: Why did I use a capital letter at the start of London? What sort of noun is it? It is a proper noun, so it needs a capital letter.
Multiple adjectives If you have more than one adjective in your expanded noun phrase, you need to break them up with a comma. Try to not have too many adjectives in one phrase, or it starts to become too long (2 or 3 at most!) comma The lush, wavy grass adjective noun
Challenge 2: Find objects around your house that you can write expanded noun phrases for. You could also write expanded noun phrases about your family members or any of the adults at school. (make sure they are not mean adjectives!) Extra challenge: Can you put any of your expanded noun phrases into sentences?
