Excretory System By: Jane Joy, Leah Haynes, and Sophia Amado Period 2

Warm Up: Q: What is an example of a waste product that the excretory system discards? A: Extra water, salts, and urea

Excretory System Main Functions: ● Removes excess (unneeded/ unwanted) materials from the body fluids of a person or organism ● The elimination of wastes from the body through the urethra from the bladder ● The bladder also controls the flow of urine throughout the body

Fun Facts: ● You will urinate about 3, 000 times in a year ● Urination occurs anywhere from 5 -10 times on a daily basis ● Your bladder can hold up to 24 ounces of liquid- which is about 2 soda cans ● The average person poops about 305 pounds of waste a year

Organs The Kidney filters blood from the urine, regulates extracellular fluid volume, and regulates osmolarity. Kidney Ureter Bladder Urethra The Ureter are each attached to one kidney that allow urine to pass through. The Bladder holds the Urine and control the flow of urine using the detrusor muscles. The Urethra is the tube that carries urine from the bladder to outside the body. In males it has the additional function of ejaculating.

Additional Organs Kidney Liver More on the Kidney- They are each about the size of a fist. Every day, the two kidneys filter about 120 to 150 quarts of blood to produce about 1 to 2 quarts of urine. The Liver detoxifies chemicals to allow the materials passing through the body to be safe for urination.

Four Corners Game Each corner will be labeled a different organ (Kidney, Bladder, Urethra/Ureters, and Liver). Someone will stand in the middle and call out a function or description of the organ and without talking everyone must go to the corner they think it is in 7 seconds. If a person is not in the corner, they are out and the game continues.

Excretory System

System Facts ● The excretory system ● This system is a works closely with the passive biological Circulatory System system and helps and the Endocrine maintain internal System homeostasis

Pathways of the Excretory System The pathway starts in the blood 1. Arteries take the blood to the kidneys 2. Kidneys filter the blood of the liquid waste 3. Ureters will then transport the waste to the bladder where it will be stored until nerves impulses are sent when the bladder is full 4. Then the urine is expelled through the urethra

Pathway

Fun facts 1. The kidney has more blood flow then the liver and brain 2. Only 0. 1% of filtered blood become urine 3. The kidneys have millions of filters inside filtering gallons of blood

Circulatory System: Blood circulates through Kidneys Endocrine System: Helps in chemical communication within body using hormones. Muscular System : Muscles in the bladder help control urine flow

Diseases and disorders 1. Acute kidney injury Is a rapid decrease in renal function over days to weeks causing nitrogenous product in the blood 2. Urinary tract infection An infection in any part of the urinary system 3. Bladder cancer Disease characterized by the growth of malignant cells within the urinary bladder

Interesting Fact Cont. ● The liver weighs about 3 pounds in adults ● It feels rubbery to the touch ● One kidney is about 4 inches long
