Dorothy is the main character of The Wonderful Wizard of Oz. She is an orphan and lives with her uncle and aunt on their farm in Kansas, along with her dog, Toto. She is a straightforward little girl who shows courage and perseverance. Dorothy seems to be very young, perhaps only five or six years of age, although she frequently seems to behave as a much older child would. Baum also gives little hint to her appearance. Toto is Dorothy's dog and her constant companion.

THE SCARECROW, THE TIN WOODMAN, AND THE COWARDLY LION. The Scarecrow complains that he has no brains, but he shows himself to be the most thoughtful of Dorothy’s companions, and his quest for intelligence demonstrates that this is what he values. I have been wicked in my day, but I never thought a little girl like you would ever be able to melt me and end my wicked deeds. Look out—here I go!"

An alien artifact, from inter-stellar space, that has travelled on a perfect trajectory for perihelion for hundreds of thousands of years.

Bill Norton is the 55 -year-old commander of the spaceship Endeavour. He leads a mission whose task is to explore the alien spacecraft Rama. As a commander, he takes an active role in most of the missions. Just like a true captain, he is always the first one to go in and the last one to come out. Norton has two wives, who live on different planets. He is traveling through space for most of the time, so he keeps in contact with his spouses by sending them near-carbon copies of his messages. His hero is Captain James Cook, a mythical explorer of the 18 th century. He often relies on the imaginary advices of Captain Cook to make important decisions regarding his missions. Whenever he faces a difficult decision or a problem that science alone cannot resolve, he imagines what Cook would do in the same situation.

All its charms revolve around setting. Rama itself is so unutterably cool that the reader is just swept away. The plot is simply exploring Rama; the characters exist to explore Rama; all conflict exists in the context of Rama. It started simple and then kept surprising you with a new big picture of what it was all about.
