Natural Radar

The famous Bracken Cave, the largest known habitat for Mexican Free-tailed Bats is located in southern Comal County, Texas, outside the city of San Antonio. It houses a colony of over 20 million bats from March to October.

The Bracken Cave lies at the bottom of a huge sinkhole, which formed when the roof of the cave collapsed inward. For over 10, 000 years, the bats have come to this cave.

The Mexican free-tailed bat (Tadarida brasiliensis) is a medium sized bat with fur that is reddish to dark brown or gray in color. These bats may have a life span of up to 18 years. They stay at Bracken Cave from March to October each year and migrate south to Central America and Mexico during the winter.

Scientists are extremely interested in how large groups of bats are able to fly at night. No matter how dark or how narrow the cave is, the bats never hit the walls. What is the science behind it? How do they detect their surroundings?

In 1940, two scientists, through the use of some customized equipment, recorded the high frequency sound waves that bats make during flight. When these sound waves hit a wall, they rebound back to the bats; their eardrums then gauge the distance between other bats and the wall, so that they can come up with the appropriate flight paths.

The sound waves produced by each bat are similar to how radar waves are; they are both highly regulated, frequent, and unique so they can be distinguished from one another, which prevents confusion.

Due to this reason, bats have to open their mouths when they are flying. If you shut their months, they will lose their bearing; if you block their ears, they will hit walls and be unable to fly. This is an interesting experiment that reveals their secret.

So you can say that bats are natural “radars”. This shows that the immaculate machines that are invented by man are often already placed in nature by God. In God’s giving the bats such an incredible organ, it speaks of His existence and wisdom.

From nature, we can see how God created with precision and exactness. God also made us with an exact and keen organ – our conscience. As a Christian in a dark age – just like how bats listen to their sound waves to find the proper flight paths – in our daily living we should listen to our conscience to judge which actions are appropriate and which are not, which places we can go, and which places we should leave. If we live according to our conscience, we will not only avoid danger and walking the wrong paths, but we will also shine as luminaries in the midst of a crooked and perverted generation.
