EVOLUTION OF THE COMPUTER By Ales Nguyen

Atanasoff-Berry Computer 1937 � The first computer, the ABC, is considered the first electronic digital computer, being invented in 1937.

Mainframe Computer � Mainframe computers are mainly used to process large amounts of data in the early 1950’s.

Supercomputer � The first supercomputer was made in 1960 and had a few processors. In the early 2000’s, however, these contained hundreds of thousands of processors that are unavailable to the public.

Minicomputer � The first minicomputer was launched in 1964 by Digital Equipment Corporations.

Microcomputer � The first computer was made in 1970 and is considered the “first microcomputer. ” It was a model similar to the older computers with a bulky monitor several times larger than the ones today.

Xerox Alto � The Xerox Alto was the first computer with a GUI, and introduced in 1973.

IBM 5100 The IBM 5100 is the first laptop, or “portable, personal, computer. ” It was built in 1975.

Apple Lisa � The Apple Lisa was the first computer with a GUI available to the public in 1976. It is the predecessor to the i. Book and Macintosh series.

Windows � The first widely known Operating System, known as Windows, is invented and managed by Microsoft in 1985.

Mac OS X � The first Unix-based OS built by technological giant Apple is made in 2001.

Blue. Gene/Q � The Blue. Gene, nicknamed Sequoia, is the world’s fastest supercomputer present day, clocking in at 16. 32 Peta. FLOPs. It is also the most energy efficient supercomputer among the TOP 500 list. It contains 1, 572, 864 cores.
