Evolution of Input
The Evolution of Typical Inputs • Biased towards input devices used in gaming. • There are too many input devices to include, such as heart rate sensors, electronic pens, MIDI, scanners, etc. • Despite being input controllers for gaming, “Gaming, ” is a mere subset of controllers, and the usage of them may not be for gaming.
The First Gamepads • The first gamepad for gaming was made in 1958, for a one of the first ever games dubbed, “Tennis for Two. ” • https: //www. youtube. com/watc h? v=s 2 E 9 i. SQf. Gdg
The First Game Controller for Consoles • The first ever console and its controller was introduced for coomercial use in 1972. • Uses an etch-a-sketch input style, where the horizontal and vertical knobs were located at the side, to move your light. • https: //www. youtube. com/watc h? v=j. Light Sensors • The technology began development in the 1930 s, but didnt start use in gaming until the • Soon after, the first light gun to ever be used in a game was released for the console. • All the gun did was detect a strong light when shot, so it was typically innacurate.
Mice • Began with the trackball- which was a ball that rotated and used the displacement to determine the desired location. • First use was in the 1940 s by the military, in the CSS, or Comprehensive Display System. This device allowed them to mark aircraft and predict possible destinations. • The first mice were in the 1960 s, and used two wheels to determine X and Y displacement. • Later Mice were more developed to use trackball technology, and even later, they started to use laser displacement technology.
Touchscreens • First develooped by CERN in the 1970 s, and due to high production costs and mass, they were not released for commercial use until a while later. • At first they were not so precise, and some could only detect up to 16 maximum locations on screen.
Accelerometers • Accelerometers detect the relative pressure being exerted due to gravity to determine orientation • Anything that can be used to detect location or force, is most likely an accelerometer.
Motion Tracking • Typically in the form of accelerometers and/or cameras. • Previously seen are the Motion Capture examples and the Kinect emples discussed in class. • Apps that edit the faces when you take your picture are essentially a software version of Motion Capture.
Where We Are Today • People are using game controllers to do things that result in immersive experiences. • https: //www. youtube. com/watch? v=tz 79 Nm.
