Enhancement of IMT-2000 • 3 G evolution activity has already been started in 3 GPP, the standards group responsible for WCDMA and relevant network standards. • 3 GPP is processing a High Speed Downlink Packet Access (HSDPA) standard which will increase the WCDMA downlink data rate to about 10 Mbit/s. The standard is expected to be ready at the end of 2001. • It is expected that there will be new work items in 3 GPP which will further improve the capacity and data rates of the WCDMA system. 12 © NOKIA 2001
Enhancement of IMT-2000 • Within the ITU work has also started on enhancements to IMT-2000 and there a number of enhancements to the existing IMT-2000 radio interfaces being considered this year, e. g. • HSDPA for WCDMA • Enhanced Data Only (DO) for cdma 2000 • Enhanced Data & Voice (DV) for cdma 2000 • The additional global spectrum for IMT-2000 is anticipated to be available around 2007 in some parts of the world such as Europe • The global spectrum for 'systems beyond' is not anticipated to be identified until the World Radio Conference in 2006, and not available until at least 2010 at the earliest. 13 © NOKIA 2001

Systems Beyond IMT-2000 • We try to avoid use of the term 4 G • It creates an expectation of a new generation replacing 3 G. . . • … an expectation that nobody likes at the moment • However, there is a need to discuss ideas for systems beyond 3 G • Research people are already focusing on new concepts • Systems take 10 years to develop, spectrum acquisition even longer • Suitable standardisation frameworks must be established • But to keep things in perspective, remember that • GSM development began as analogue systems were being deployed • IMT-2000 concepts were developing as GSM was being specified 16 © NOKIA 2001
World Wireless Research Forum (WWRF) • WWRF is an initiative by Nokia, Ericsson, Siemens and Alcatel to provide an open research-oriented discussion forum for all long term research activities related to further progress of the radio interfaces. • The objective is to facilitate discussions related to future wireless activities and to influence European public research funding allocation, by developing proposals for R&D priorities and programmes to support national and international research. • A "Book of Visions 2001" will summarise the key trends and ideas for the future wireless world, and contribute to the development of the European Union's 6 th Framework Research Programme. • The inaugural meeting was held on March 6 & 7 2001 in Munich. 17 © NOKIA 2001
