A children's story By Mr. Soriano
There was once a population of fish… Some fish were large and some fish were small (variation) but these fish were still all of the same species.
One day, a net came by and swooped up all of the large fish. Air… I need…ah Not like this! Nooooooo! Selection Pressure But the small and medium fish were able to escape…
While the nets kept on taking the larger fishes, the smaller fishes were still surviving and reproducing. They had greater reproductive success than those larger fish.
Population before Artificial selection Population after Artificial selection The smaller fish kept on mating and passing on their “small genes” to their younglings (Inheritable traits). And after many years and multiple generations of fish, the fish population became much smaller than it used to be.

Do individuals evolve?
How would you define selection pressure?
How can you tell Natural Selection and Artificial Selection apart?
Natural Selection Pressures
Artificial Selection Pressures
Case Study Diamondback Moth
Bacillus thuringiensis
Case Study #1 Bacillus thuringiensis is a bacteria that kills the diamondback moth. In Hawaii, watercress farmers used B. t as a insecticide to protect their crops; however, after a year the B. t seemed to not work. In your group (7 min), develop a thorough hypothesis using: population, variation, differential reproductive success, inheritance, and adaptation, that explains why the B. t insecticide is no longer working
Today’s Goal • Be able to describe the similarities and differences between natural selection and artificial selection.
Homework: Selection Venn Diagram • Due in two class periods • Directions: Create a Venn diagram that compares and contrast 1) Natural, 2) Artificial, and 3) Sexual selection (We did not cover sexual selection so you have some researching to do) • Extra Credit: Make a selection Venn diagram poster that makes it on the wall! Be creative, use images and color, and make it visually striking!
