What is EBP? n “…the enhancement of a clinician’s traditional skills in diagnosis, treatment, prevention and related areas through the framing of answerable questions and the use of mathematical estimates of probability and risk. ” -Greenhalgh, 2001
Criticism? n Obvious? - May sound obvious, but EBP is deceptively simple n Necessary? Staying on top of relevant literature in 21 st century can be like “trying to get a sip of water out of a firehose”
Asking answerable clinical questions Background -who/when/where/how/why of condition q Foreground -about likely interventions and approaches to situation, problem, population at hand; how it relates to alternatives and to target outcome q “PICO” q
Finding Best Evidence – Systems (greatest number of studies analyzed, lowest amount of detail) -Synopses – Syntheses -Studies (individual study; highest level of detail) n “Pyramid” of types of evidence
