Evidence and Warrant
What is evidence and why do I need it? • Evidence includes • • Examples References Quotes Facts • Evidence supports your claim/subclaim- justification for the reasons in your argument
Example of Evidence • Just like a lawyer has to have evidence to make an argument in court, your paper has to have evidence to make your claim. • Claim: Gun control has become almost nonexistent in Arizona, and as a result, just about anyone can own a firearm. • Evidence: For example, in Arizona anyone can purchase a gun with a minimal background check and this is due to the state of Arizona having little gun control laws; it is like the wild west. Additionally, a conceal to carry permit is not required; anyone can hide a firearm on them and go about their daily business.
What is Warrant and why do I need it? • Just like a police officer has to obtain a warrant (a certified and approved justification of reason) from a judge (authority) to search property, your paper also has to have WARRANT. • Warrant gives authority to the claim/subclaim • It explains how the evidence supports the subclaim • After you introduce evidence into your writing, you must say why and how this evidence supports your argument. • In other words, you have to explain the significance of the evidence and its function in your paper.
Example of Warrant • Evidence: For example, in Arizona anyone can purchase a gun with a minimal background check and this is due to the state of Arizona having little gun control laws; it is like the wild west. Additionally, a conceal to carry permit is not required; anyone can hide a firearm on them and go about their daily business. • Warrant: In general, because it is so easy to obtain a firearm in Arizona, more people are carrying guns and the number of shootings continues to increase. Every day there are numerous reports of shootings around the state.
The Power of Warrant • What turns a fact or piece of information into evidence is the connection it has with a larger claim or argument: evidence is always evidence for or against something, and you have to make that link clear. • How do you make the link clear? With WARRANT!
SEW Sets • When drafting your support for your argument (reason 1, 2, and 3), you will write SEW sets. • • • Topic Sentence S- subclaim/statement E- evidence W- warrant Concluding sentence
