Microprocessor and Interfacing Subject Code: 66662 Technology: Computer & Electronics Semester: 6 th Shift: Both S. Juthi Al Saki Junior Instructor (Tech) Computer Mymensingh Polytechnic Institute

Learning outcome At the end of this session learner’s will be able To define the microprocessor and microcomputer. To define the microcontroller. To indentify the microprocessor. To distinguish microprocessor and microcomputer.

1. 1 Define the microprocessor and microcomputer. • A microprocessor incorporates the functions of a computer’s central processing unit (CPU) on a single integrated circuit (IC), or at most a few integrated circuits. • The microprocessor is a multipurpose, programmable device that accepts digital data as input, processes it according to instructions stored in its memory, and provides results as output.

Structure of Microprocessor It has three elements: • ALU(Arithmetic Logic Unit) • Register Array • Timing & Control Unit ALU(Arithmetic Logic Unit) Register Array Timing & Control Unit

Microcomputer A microcomputer is a small, relatively inexpensive computer with a microprocessor as its central processing unit (CPU). It includes a microprocessor, memory and minimal input/output (I/O) circuitry mounted on a single printed circuit board (PCB).

Structure of microcomputer It has five elements: 1. ALU(Arithmetic Logic Unit) 2. Control Unit 3. Memory Unit 4. Input Unit 5. Output Unit

1. 2 Distinguish microprocessor and microcomputer

Define microcontroller A microcontroller (MCU for microcontroller unit) is a small computer on a single metal-oxidesemiconductor (MOS) integrated circuit chip. In modern terminology, it is similar to, but less sophisticated than, a system on a chip (So. C); a So. C may include a microcontroller as one of its components. A microcontroller contains one or more CPUs (processor cores) along with memory and programmable input/output peripherals. Program memory in the form of ferroelectric RAM, NOR flash or OTP ROM is also often included on chip, as well as a small amount of RAM.

Define microcontroller

Evaluation 1. 2. 3. 4. Tell different types of microprocessor? Give some example of 8 & 16 bit Microprocessor. Distinguish 8 bit & 16 bit microprocessor. Characteristics of microprocessor.
