Everybody Needs to Know What you should know
Everybody Needs to Know What you should know about online shopping scams. How to protect against online shopping scams: Online shopping scams are always prevalent, but the holiday season is a particularly dangerous time since hackers know more people will be looking for deals. As a result, we're more likely to fall prey to online scams around Cyber Monday, Black Friday or other major holidays. Be wary of special offers that come over email and social media, particularly if they’re from a store you’ve never heard of. It’s always safer to go directly to a known site by entering the URL in your browser window instead of clicking a link. If you do click on a link, check the URL to ensure you’re on the site you intended to reach. If a deal looks too good to be true or seems suspicious, it probably is. Trust your instinct. When shopping online with a smaller or unknown retailer, check for contact details (an office location with a physical address). Also look for a social presence on Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook, and make sure their accounts are active. When shopping online, make sure the site uses an HTTPS URL (look for the padlock in your browser’s address bar). After making purchases online, monitor your accounts, and keep an eye out for suspicious activity. During the holidays, cybercriminals set up 'shop' with scams offering amazing deals to reel us in. These scams often start with a carefully designed email announcing a remarkable deal and a link that directs us to a look-alike domain and landing page. These spoofed pages look so much like the actual sites they’re imitating that it can be almost impossible to tell the difference. © 2020 Mimecast. All Rights Reserved.
