Tariffs in the North • A tariff is a tax placed on a good bought from another country. Before the Civil War, Northern industries were upset that the South was purchasing goods from Britain. To change this, the North wanted to place a tariff or tax on British goods. The tariff would make the British goods more expensive and make the Northern goods less expensive. More people would then buy the Northern goods.

Tariffs in the South • The South did not want this. They were afraid that if a tariff was placed on the British goods, then no one would buy the British goods. If no one bought the British goods, then the British would not need to buy Southern cotton to make their goods. The Southern farmers would then lose money because the British would not be buying cotton from them. The Southerners thus disagreed with the North over tariffs.
