Evaporation and Condensation Tuesday’s Science

Look at all of the pictures. What is happening in all of the pictures?

Evaporation is the changing of a liquid into a gas. Evaporation happens all around us without us knowing it. A puddle on the road which begins to ‘disappear’ is evaporating.

Evaporation happens at a faster rate by the temperature being warmer and by the air moving more quickly in a breeze.

You can see evaporation taking place when a kettle boils, steam is the gas coming from the water. Sometimes you can see steam rising from the road or the playground after it has rained, this too is evaporation.

Other examples of evaporation include warm-air hand driers, blowing on it to dry it and washing drying well on a sunny breezy day.

When water heats up, it turns into water vapour. Once water becomes water vapour, it can easily move up to the Earth's atmosphere.

Let’s investigate evaporation Place a full cup of water in front of a sunny window. Use a marker to make a line at the beginning water level. Each hour, mark the water level and begin to look for changes. As the sun heats up the water, it should begin to evaporate. This experiment requires some patients, so while, it’s a great time to continue with your home learning.

Condensation is the process by which a gas turns into a liquid, due to a reduction in the energy of its particles. This happens when the vapour in the air gets cold. When the vapour gets cold, it gets transformed back into a liquid form. Examples include; glasses fogging up, dew on grass and water droplets on the inside of a window.

Let’s investigate condensation When the water vapor reaches the sky it cools to form clouds. 1. With adult help, fill a transparent cup or glass approximately two-thirds full of hot water. 2. Take another cup, flip it upside down, and place it on top of the cup with hot water. 3. Then place an ice cube on top of the upside down cup. Condensation will begin to form at the top of the upside down cup, just like a cloud.
