EVALUATION OF EROSION FOR COASTAL HIGHWAYS & LEVEES LANE EVERETT BLOCKER DR. NING ZHANG & DR. ZHUANG LI, FACULTY MENTORS Mc. Neese State University Department of Engineering
OUTLINE • Purpose • Numerical Simulation • Experimental Study • Comparison of Numerical Simulation Against Experimental Study • Analysis Conclusion • Future Research
PURPOSE • Coastal Highways Protect Coastal Shorelines • Highways Serve as Barrier to Flood Damage • Loss of Emergency Routes from Coastal Areas • Significant Costs Related to the Rebuilding of Failed Highways • A Better Understanding of Erosion Forces • A Need for Better Highway Construction and Materials
PURPOSE • Highway 82 was damaged by hurricane when storm surge toped the highway • The damage Occurred in the north shoulder of the highway • The need arose to understand the physics behind this erosion.
