Know your Sources of Information Tool General Themes Authors and Audiences – Who created this message? Who is the target Audience (and how do you know)? Why might this message matter to me or others? Messages and Meanings – What creative techniques are used to attract my attention? How might different people understand this message differently from me? What might the audience do with this message? Representations and Reality – What lifestyles, values, and points of view are represented or omitted? How Science Works Science works by carefully studying a topic and continuously revising our understandings of that topic over time. This is a strength of science – Always working to strengthen our understandings over time with the latest information, finding errors and correcting, correcting misconceptions.

Common Problems Satire – Using humor, irony, exaggeration or ridicule. Often people will miss this and take a literal interpretation. Clickbait – Using a provocative headline to appeal to emotion in order to distract you, usually for the purpose of merchandise or directing traffic to a website. Hyperpartisan politicized news (extreme left, extreme right). - Selecting, Presenting, Processing, and/or Interpreting news about science through extreme ideologies. Invented News - This is truly “alternative facts” or “fake news. ” Faking data, altering the story in such a way that it is artificial in order to serve a special interest.
