Evaluating Notes for Evaluating Learning Objectives 1 Evaluating
Evaluating
Notes for: Evaluating/ Learning Objectives 1. Evaluating is an important Leadership Skill 2. I will help you understand THE PROCESS OF EVALUATING. Good leaders always evaluate all the way through a process, but especially after completion it is vital to look back to see what really happened so every skill thereafter is better because of evaluating. 3. Hopefully you will BE ABLE TO APPLY IT on this COURSE. Ask: “What is the purpose of evaluating? ” (Give them a minute to share ideas. )
PURPOSE OF EVALUATING Ø SET AND MAINTAIN STANDARDS Ø IMPROVE PERFORMANCE Ø RECOGNIZE ACHIEVMENT Ø TO MOTIVATE
Notes for: Evaluating helps us to 1) Set and Maintain Standards 2) Improve Performance 3) Recognize Achievement, and 4) To motivate ourselves and others
HALT! NO CRITICIZING
Notes for: Halt! No Criticizing “Evaluate” does not mean to “criticize”. Ask the members of the squad “How do you feel when someone is always ‘down’ on you; nagging you or ‘on your case? ” When people feel criticized they tend to shut down—refuse to offer suggestions or help. It is better to evaluate in a positive manner so ideas and assistance keeps coming. Ask “How can you give positive evaluation? ” (Concentrate on the good, be kind… make the positives ‘bigger’ than any negatives. )
SIX SIMPLE QUESTIONS 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. DID THE JOB GET DONE? WAS IT DONE RIGHT? WAS IT DONE ON TIME? DID EVERYONE TAKE PART? DID THEY ENJOY THE TASK? DO THEY WANT MORE?
Notes for: 6 simple Questions DID THE JOB GET DONE? WAS IT DONE RIGHT? WAS IT DONE ON TIME? DID EVERYONE TAKE PART? DID THEY ENJOY THE TASK? DO THEY WANT MORE? Point out: the first 3 questions deal with getting a job done, while the last 3 deal with the individual group members.
FINDING A BALANCE KEEP THE GROUP TOGETHER GET THE JOB DONE
Notes for: Finding a Balance: A- We have 2 problems: #1) getting the job done, and #2) keeping the group together (both physically and emotionally) It is important that we keep these two in balance.
GROUP JOB
Notes for: Balance down on Job end If the job is getting done but not everyone is working, or not everyone feels good about what the group is doing, the balance looks like this. Ask “What could the group do to correct a lack of balance like this? ” (Give them time to discuss possibilities. )
JOB GROUP
Notes for: Balance with group end down Maybe here everyone is doing the same thing and maybe they feel good about being together, but the job isn’t getting done. We see this when the group gets playing or joking around. Ask “What could the group do to correct an out-of-balance like this? ” (Give time for suggestions. )
WE ARE ALWAYS EVALUATING 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. ARE WE GETTING THE JOB DONE? ARE WE DOING IT RIGHT? ARE WE ON SCHEDULE? IS EVERYONE INVOLVED? IS EVERYONE DOING A GOOD JOB? DO THEY WANT TO CONTINUE?
Notes for: We are Always Evaluating We are always making decisions and choosing between alternatives. ARE WE GETTING THE JOB DONE? ARE WE DOING IT RIGHT? ARE WE ON SCHEDULE? IS EVERYONE INVOLVED? IS EVERYONE DOING A GOOD JOB? DO THEY WANT TO CONTINUE?
“CUT EM’ SOME SLACK!”
Notes for: Cut ‘em some slack! Ask: “What happens when a guy is doing his best, but he still isn’t getting the job done? ” Each of us will be in situations where we can’t perform to the expected standard. How would we like to be treated? In summary: 1) We are trying to get the job done AND keep the group together. 2) We should evaluate both along the way and at the end. 3) How do we make a positive evaluation? a) don’t speak negatively about a person, only about what has happened. b) avoid giving a person a negative label (such as lazy, stupid, jerk, etc…) c) consider what YOU might have done in the same situation. d) ask questions rather than make statements (“What do you think about moving the fire over here? ” rather than “The fire would be better over here. ” 4) (Now have the squad evaluate their boat and decide what improvements they would make. Have them make the changes. )
