INDEX 1 Semantic Web and Linked Open Data 2 The Europeana Project 3 Linked Open Data in Europeana 4 Europeana Data Model (EDM) 5 Aditional Information
1 – Semantic Web and Linked Open Data q Web content inprovement oriented practices toolset q Provides more meaningfull information. more defined and structured q Allows the users to find faster answers to their queries.
1 – Semantic Web and Linked Open Data The 5 stars of Linked Open Data: ★ ★ ★ Make your material available in the web (regardeless the format) ★ ★ ★ Make it available as structured data (ex. excel instead scanned image of a table) ★ ★ ★ In a not proprietary format (ex. csv instead excel) ★ ★ ★ Use URLs to identify things (thus anybody would reference them) ★ ★ ★ Link your resources to others resources to provide a context.
2 – The Europeana Project
2 – The Europeana Project 23 million digital objects in Europeana. 17 million digital objects are covered by the Data Exchange Agreement. (rights cession warranty regarding metadata) 2. 200 institutions involved. The Linked Open Data Pilot initiative has 3 million digital objects. There are 20 API implementatiosn reusing Europeana digital objects. (and 68 refused requests)
2 – The Europeana Project Italy provides 10% of digital objects of Europeana, whereas Spain provides 9%. France is the main contributor with 17%. In Italy, lot of institutions provide digital resources to Europeana. (distributed structure) In Spain, Hispana in the main contributor, being the 4 th content provider in Europeana. (centralized structure)
2 – The Europeana Project
3 – Linked Open Data in Europeana The user search for “Venus” in the web …
3 – Linked Open Data in Europeana … and after visiting several webs, finally finds what he was looking for:
3 – Linked Open Data in Europeana proposes a change in on this: ¿What if the search tool helps me from the very beginning to know from the first step what I mean with “Venus” driving me directly to the right resource?
3 – Linked Open Data in Europeana ¿What if the resource is enriched with dynamically updated information?
3 – Linked Open Data in Europeana ¿And the user will receive all the information in a single step?
3 – Linked Open Data in Europeana This is possible by meaning of Linked Open Data in 4 steps: Your data must be in an open environment Your data must appear in the web with simple linking formats (RDF)
3 – Linked Open Data in Europeana Your data on-line must have a single adress/identifier Your data on-line must follow standard internet protocol, this way data will be interconnected.
3 – Linked Open Data in Europeana With these 4 steps we understand what is Europeana aim. But , ¿What I need to reach to Europeana? REQUIREMENT OPEN SOURCE SW Digital Repository DSpace, Eprints, Fedora OAI-PMH protocol fullfillment DSpace, Eprints, Fedora Europeana Semantic Elements (ESE) fullfillment Europeana Data Model (EDM) fullfillment Sign an agreement with Europeana DSpace, Eprints DSpace no software needed
4 – Europeana Data Model (EDM) Is a more meaninfull and flexible model than previous one: Europeana Semantic Elements (ESE). Based on fundamental principles and best practices of Semantic Web and Linked Data. Built on standards like RDF, OAI-ORE, SKOS and Dublin Core. EDM is complicated EMD evolves (changes)
4 – Europeana Data Model (EDM) 922 instalations of DSpace worldwide 98 instalations DSpace in Spain and 69 in Italy.
4 – Europeana Data Model (EDM) DSpace adaptation to EDM DSpace adaptation to Linked Open Data following EDM model ESE to EDM mapping ESE to EDM plugin adaptation available (made by Scanbit + Ibai Sistemas) Feasible following implementation study guidelines made for Spanish Ministry of Culture. (made by Scanbit + Ibai Sistemas)
4 – Europeana Data Model (EDM) DSpace to Europeana adaptation study: Entrusted to Ibai Sistemas + Scanbit by Spanish Ministry of Culture. Performed in contact with all involved agents. The 98 DSpace instalations in Spain. The 25 DSpace Service Provider worldwide. Describes in detail the Open Source settlement to apply Any institution with DSPACE development resources will be able to apply it.
4 – Europeana Data Model (EDM) DSpace adapted to EDM in SPAIN: Universidad de Granada (Digibug) Gobierno Vasco (Liburuklik) Universidad de Navarra (Dadun) Fundación Sancho el Sabio (Memoria Digital Vasca) Universidad San Pablo CEU Universidad de Valladolid First 5 implemented by Scanbit + Ibai Sistemas
5 – Additional Information Based on Scanbit + Ibai Sistemas achievement: Universitat Autonoma de Barcelona has required a budget to adapt to EDM a different Open Source Software: CDS-Invenio, from CERN (European Organization for Nuclear Research). United Nations Organization, from New York, has choosen Scanbit + Ibai Sistemas as one of 3 Service Providers of DSpace candidate to develop their repository.
