European Organization for Nuclear Research SLM: Virtualization Status Omer Khalid 20 th Oct 2010
Outline Group requirements CERN Virtualization infrastructure Image templates Resources required Conclusion European Organization for Nuclear Research
Group Requirements • Results gathered from all sections for their needs • Total VM requirements: 80 -100 • 75% of them for frequent and short-durations: max. 2 weeks • Mostly by PLC and SCD sections • 25% for production use and always running • Primarily in SIC and MTA sections • Per section preferences: • SIC: CVI + local set up with VMWare worksation/ESXi/Xen • PLC: CVI + local set up with VMWare workstation • SCD: CVI + local set up virtual box (could be VMWare) • MTA: CVI could meet all requirements European Organization for Nuclear Research
Cern Virtualization Infrastructure • Had a meeting with Jan Van Eldik: CVI manager • 100 VM’s requirements can’t be fulfilled at present resource level • CVI is going to be updated in few weeks; too many errors on the access portal; limited linux availability. • BE-CO is also moving to CVI but has dedicated hardware • CVI offers: • A set of 5 windows image templates for our group • Preparation of these templates already started with the sections • Selected users from the working group to evaluate • Up to 20 -25 VM’s • Ideally dedicated hardware should be put in place European Organization for Nuclear Research
Image templates on CVI • MTA section: standard Win XP image • PLC/SCD: 4 images 1. PVSS 3. 6 SP 2 + Unity 4. 0 + Step 7 5. 5 2. PVSS 3. 8 SP 1 + Unity 5. 0 + Step 7 5. 5 3. PVSS 3 3. 8 SP 1 + Visual Studio 2003 4. PLC Simulations with Schneider S/W • SIC section: 1 image • with Java development toolkit European Organization for Nuclear Research
Resources Needed • Group wide setup: • Requested one server with 24 -cores; Fredrick Bernard looking into it • Mainly used for Linux VM’s and for PLC/SCD sections • Group already paid for it • One license of v. Sphere ESXi for 12 -cores per CPU • Section wide setup: • 5 workstations + 2 ESXi server licences ~= 4 k CHF • Used/shared by all sections; I will interface for licenses with guidelines. • Quote received: pending approval • Additional licenses of Workstation • Could be acquired incrementally at a cost of: 180 Chf per license European Organization for Nuclear Research
Conclusion • CVI agreed to host images • For smaller deployments; they will monitor our use • May need dedicated hardware (funding will be required) • Images are being prepared • To evaluate how many of our use cases it could satisfy • Group setup • 1 server with ESXi for Linux • Local setup • Software licenses required; quote available. • All this should be rolled out first to working group and later to the group members Open Discussion - Questions European Organization for Nuclear Research
