What is EMI? The European Middleware Initiative (EMI) project represents a close collaboration of the three major middleware providers - ARC, g. Lite and UNICORE, together with other software providers - to support, standardized and evolve the grid middleware for deployment in EGI, PRACE and other distributed e-Infrastructures EMI Overview for OSG All Hands 3
What does it mean for you? • EMI is foreseen to start on May 1 st, 2010 with an estimated budget of 24 M € for 3 years – However EMI covers the tasks previously provided by EGEE/JRA 1, EGEE/SA 3, ETICS, Know. ARC, part of UNICORE, part of d. Cache – The EMI funding is lower that the sum of the funding of the above entities • It will coordinate most of the grid middleware development activities in Europe • It inherits and enhances the existing relationships with OSG, VDT, Globus, OGF, etc in middleware related matters • No gaps in support and maintenance of the existing middleware components from ARC, g. Lite and UNICORE • Migration planning is well under way especially in collaboration with EGI and EGEE, EMI Overview for OSG All Hands 4
How does it work? • Improve requirement analysis and enforcement, starting from the base services • Take an active role in the standardization and interoperability activities in a very practical way • Explore grid services integration with or transition to emerging computing models based on virtualization and clouds • Push packages to mainstream distributions (native packaging) • Priorities: • Security improvements, harmonization and simplification (common libs, SLCS) • Base common services: messaging, information systems, service management and accounting, use of virtualization • Standard compliance (job submission, data management, information, accounting, etc. ) EMI Overview for OSG All Hands 5
