European Institute of Innovation and Technology (EIT) A body of the European Union: Established: 2008, HQ in Budapest From idea to product, from lab to market, from student to entrepreneur Why set up/Objectives? • To bring together the triple helix of Higher Education, Business & research, • To address the fact that the EU is behind Korea, Japan and the US , is weak at translating research into economic value “the valley of death” • To counter the brain drain • To foster young talent and develop a culture of entrepreneurship • To improve the competitiveness of the EU How will they achieve this? • Integrate higher education, research and business in areas of high societal need via Knowledge and Innovation Communities (KICs),

Knowledge and Innovation Community (KIC) EIT’s OBJECTIVES TRANSLATE INTO KIC’s KICs Highly integrated, creative

Knowledge and Innovation Community (KIC) EIT’s OBJECTIVES TRANSLATE INTO KIC’s KICs Highly integrated, creative and excellence-driven autonomous partnerships under the leadership of a CEO following a business plan for min. 7 years KIC Distribution Clustering partners in co-location centres distributed throughout Europe that are thematically convergent and driven by societal challenges. Little UK activity KIC partners Key actors from the knowledge triangle: research, higher education & business KICs’ budget Seed financed by EIT up to 25%. 2009: 1 st 3 KICs • Climate-KIC, • ICT Labs • Inno. Energy

The Future of the EIT to become a hub providing knowledge to all stakeholders

The Future of the EIT to become a hub providing knowledge to all stakeholders within the innovation knowledge triangle Consolidate the current KICs and set up 6 further KICs: 2014: • healthy living & active ageing, • food 4 future, • raw materials 2018: • added value manufacturing, • smart secure societies & • urban mobility

European Innovation Partnerships A new way of bringing together public and private actors at

European Innovation Partnerships A new way of bringing together public and private actors at EU, national and regional level to tackle the grand challenges such as, climate change, energy and food security, health and an ageing population. Partnerships will aim to give the EU a first-mover advantage in these markets. EIPs streamline, simplify and better coordinate existing instruments and initiatives and complement them with new actions where necessary. e. g. EIP AHA will support coordination of all Ageing research and innovation funding programmes across H 2020 (ICT, Health, etc) as well as having their own funding streams available WHY are they important to COVUNI? For any funding in these areas it will be necessary/advisable to be a member of the appropriate EIP to a) get access to their funding b) have a better chance of success in H 2020 EIP Active and Healthy Ageing = First pilot EIP
