Early exploration and travels The early European sailors into Asia were almost all from Portugal’s landlocked location, far from the old Silk Road, forced them to get on ships and find their own way to Asia through the sea. At first these missions were simple expeditions of curiosity. Adventurers hoped to become rich and spread the word of God. Once greed set in however, and they were met with resistance from older powerful traders in the area, things got violent. . .

Prince Henry the Navigator Although he was neither a sailor nor a navigator, he sponsored a great deal of exploration along the west coast of Africa. Henry is also credited with furthering knowledge of geography, mapmaking and navigation. He even started a college of Navigation in Portugal. Henry is regarded as an originator of the Age of Discovery and the Atlantic slave trade.

Bartolomeu Dias departed Portugal August 1487, rounding the southernmost tip of Africa in January 1488. The Portuguese (possibly Dias himself) named this point of land the Cape of Good Hope. Dias' cargo included the standard "padrões, " the limestone markers used to mark territory and help future sailors.

Vasco da Gama Portuguese explorer Vasco da Gama was commissioned by the Portuguese king to find a maritime route to the East. He was the first person to sail directly from Europe to India. When he got to India, the Muslim traders in charge were not friendly and made trade difficult. When da Gama told the Portuguese King about the unfriendly Muslim traders, they organized another mission to go take the trading cities by force.

Pedro Álvares Cabral was the first European to discover Brazil. After, he was sent to India to set up trade routes and deal with Muslim Traders Disputes between the Arab traders and the Portuguese were common. At one point, several Portuguese men were killed by the Arabs. Cabral got even by raiding the city and capturing ten Arab ships, and then executing their crew. . .

Economic Empires - The East India Companies Once the Europeans got to Asia and realized how much money they could make by taking advantage of the smaller countries, they started building huge companies to manage trade and take over local markets. These were the first major conglomerate companies in the history of the world A conglomerate is a massive super-company that is made when several smaller companies join together to control as much business as possible.

The British EIC and Dutch VOC The British and Dutch were particularly good businessmen… While the less successful French and Portuguese Companies were ran exclusively by their kings… The British and Dutch East India Companies were the first Joint-Stock companies in the world. They traded stocks on the market to the actual public. This made them more flexible with their money, very wealthy, and very powerful (This is the same East India Company that had its tea thrown into the harbor at the Boston Tea Party)
