SOME CHALLENGES ENCOUNTERED • Donated projects are predominantly political, (history) education is not the first target or considered too sensitive • Trainings can only address certain aspects, not a comprehensive course • A rather aged (history) educators
SOME CHALLENGES ENCOUNTERED • Wide gabs and even serious disagreements between main actors: historians, experts in history didactics, educationalists and history education practitioners • Big bureaucratic and practical difficulties for teachers to participate in Life Long Learning events • Growing financial crisis
Positive developments Teacher Quality (back? ) on the agenda • Evidence from amongst others Finland Korea that if the best students decide for education, (PISA) results rise • WISE Summits Quatar since 2009 • EU High Level Group Education and Training September 2011: investment in increasing teacher quality has high returns …
Positive developments Teacher Quality (back? ) on the agenda • Recommendation of the Council of Europe July 2011 on intercultural dialogue and the image of the other in history teaching • Several Articles in the Economist of September 2011 • New Education Law in Turkey in September 2011 with emphasis of strengthening Teacher Quality • Education Europe expected on 23 November with special attention for LLL for educational staff
