HISTORY • Eton college was founded by Henry VI in 1440 to provide free education to 70 poor boys who would then go on to King's College, Cambridge, which he founded in 1441. Its full name is "The King's College of Our Lady of Eton besides Windsor“.

SITUATION • Eton College is situated 30 kilometers west of London on the River Thames, close to the royal Windsor Castle.

Eton College is a private boarding school for boys of 13 18 years old. The tuition is £ 24. 490 or $ 50, 000 per year. The total number of the students who study in Eton is 1, 300. Eton is one of nine English independent schools, commonly referred to as “public schools“.

ADMISSIONS Most of Eton’s 1300 students enter the school at the age of 13. The assessment consists of an interview, a reasoning test and a report from the boy’s current school. The entry system is managed by the tutor for admissions on the Head Master’s behalf. The Head Master reserves the right to refuse or to admit any boy.

THE ACADEMIC STRUCTURE Eton is divided into five yeargroups called blocks, from F (Year 9) to B (Year 13). There are 35 schools (lessons) a week in which formal teaching takes place, but almost all boys have some reading schools (free periods). Boys are taught in groups normally containing about ten or twelve boys. In each block, a programme of regular out-of-school work (Extra Works, EW) is laid down.

BOARDING When a boy comes to Eton, he will join a house of just over 50, aged between 13 and 18. His house will be the hub of his life at Eton for the next five years. Each house is under the care of a house master, who will look after him, support him and, if necessary, make sure he behaves himself. The house master is the main point of contact with the school for a boy's parents.

UNIFORM The school is known for its traditions, including its uniform, which consists of a black frock coat and a vest, a collar and pinstriped trousers. Most students wear a white tie, but some senior students are entitled to wear a white tie and an Italian collar.

SCHOOL TERMS There are three academic terms (known as halves in ) the year, • The Michaelmas Half, from early September to mid December. New boys are now admitted only at the start of the Michaelmas Half, unless in exceptional circumstances. • The Lent Half, from mid-January to late March. • The Summer Half, from late April to late June or early July. They are called halves because the school year was once split into two halves, between which the boys went home.

SPORTS The sport curriculum is dominated by football and rugby union, the Eton wall game; with some rowing for a smaller number of boys. Sport is a feature of Eton; there is an extensive network of playing fields.

CORPORAL PUNISHMENT • Eton used to be renowned for its use of corporal punishment, generally known as "beating". In the 16 th century, Friday was set aside as "flogging day". • Beating was phased out in the 1980 s. The film director Sebastian Doggart claims to have been the last boy caned at Eton, in 1984.

OLD ETONIANS • Former pupils of Eton College are known as Old Etonians. Eton has produced nineteen British Prime Ministers and the current Prime Minister, David Cameron.
