Ethnographic research design with a focus on LGBTUA
Ethnographic research design with a focus on LGBTUA+ RSE teaching Tutor Jen Rowan-Lancaster
Background – About me • Jen Rowan-Lancaster • Primary Team • PSHE Coordinator • Completing an Education Doctorate (Ed. D) with a focus on LGBTUA+ RSE. • LGBTUA+ teacher educator
My Ed. D research focus • LGBTUA+ RSE – let me tell you a little more • The research literature – what does it say? • What have I done so far? • How did I go about deciding on a research design?
Ethnographic research • What is it? • Who can do it? • What are the advantages and limitations? • How has it been beneficial in my research?
My research tools • Workshop • Questionnaire (quantitative data • Body Map (therapeutic tool) • Focus group • Field notes (narrative inquiry) • Pilot study
My findings so far I haven’t had a chance to begin my data analysis however themes that have emerged generally match up with the literature: Fear about upsetting parents Fear about not being supported by your school Conflicts between ideas of professionalism and teaching LGBTUA+ RSE Tension between religious beliefs and LGBTUA+ teaching Fears/concerns about offending LGBTUA+ individuals and families if we ‘get it wrong’ – say the wrong thing, use the wrong terminology. • Fears/concerns linked to social media – what the consequences of teaching LGBTUA+ content are in communities and whether parents will broadcast this on social media – blurring the lines between professional and personal lives. • • •
Any questions? • Please feel free to ask any questions – hands –up or in chat. • Are you interesting in completing your MA? Could you see yourselves doing ethnographic research? Any specific questions about this approach?
