ADULT EDUCATION – JUDGED OUTSTANDING Learners know very well how to keep safe. They understand why online safety concerns and the need to be alert to the potential risks of radicalisation are relevant to them. Teachers take the opportunity to raise learners’ awareness of safeguarding issues and British values as they occur in lessons. For example, learners on a community interpreting course discussed why it might be appropriate to break confidentiality should clients be at risk of harm or where they have concerns about a potential terrorist threat. EDUCATION & TRAINING FOUNDATION 13
ADULT EDUCATION – JUDGED GOOD Learners feel safe. They know what to do and whom to contact should they need support, feel that they have been treated unfairly or if they, or their peers, are at risk from extremism or radicalisation. Tutors promote British values well by incorporating these within learning sessions. They help learners improve their speaking and listening skills by holding discussions on topics such as employment, the National Health Service and democracy. responsibilities, enabling them to participate more fully in their local community. EDUCATION & TRAINING FOUNDATION 14

EMPLOYER PROVIDER – AREAS FOR IMPROVEMENT Apprentices have a limited understanding of the risks associated with extremism and radicalisation. Apprentices cannot apply their understanding of British values to their everyday lives and workplaces. They do not take part in thoughtful debates or discussion throughout their programmes and therefore do not extend their understanding beyond a basic level of knowledge. EDUCATION & TRAINING FOUNDATION 17
COMMENTS FROM OFSTED REPORTS Assessors do not find enough opportunities for apprentices to extend their understanding of issues associated with the ‘Prevent’ duty through the review process. Learners do not have a clear understanding of the risks associated with extremism and radicalisation. Apprentices do not all have a good understanding of British values or how to keep themselves safe from extremism or radicalisation A minority of apprentices struggle to explain clearly their understanding of fundamental British values.
