ORPS 9/18/19 Hazardous waste brought from offsite location (Richmond) identified in 977 -271 Potter lab area. Regulations do not allow transfer of wastes from other facilities. City of Berkeley and DTSC notified. EHS/ R. Scholtz City of Berkeley visited Potter and observed wastes on 10/3/19. A report with requirements will be issued.

Significant Safety Achievements- 9/19 • An old chemical clean-out was completed for Building 70. These included 70 -201, 70 -215, 70 -221, 70 -248, and 70 -173. • Annual updates/renewals of Level 3 and Level 2 Work Activities continues. • Provided follow-up on the off-site hazardous waste issue identified at 977271 (Potter). We are waiting for a report from the City of Berkeley prior to any further actions to have it removed. • I gave two safety presentations to County of Santa Clara personnel as part of their annual Safety-fest Day. • We held our quarterly Lab Area Safety Lead meeting on 9/10/19. There was a lot of good information exchanged and some action items for follow -up. • A Safety Alert was issued regarding new process gas labeling requirements. • Training for the new Lab Area Safety Lead designated for Cyclotron Road was completed. Several other new leads were ETA 0015 trained as well.
Short Term Safety Outlook 10/19 • Assist with any resolution to the on-going off-site hazardous waste/chemical storage issue at Potter. • Complete remaining annual renewals of Level 2 and 3 work activities for 2019. • There will be an old chemical clean-out at 977 -271 for some left over Mallinda chemicals. A batch has already been consolidated. • We are participating in the new Chemical Stewardship Self. Assessment group consisting of multiple LBNL Areas. Planning has begun. • A quarterly SAA hazardous waste inspection is being planned for October.
