Significant Safety Achievements- 1/17 • • The Oven/Furnace Self Assessment project is moving along. We are currently surveying researchers individually regarding oven/furnace operation and maintenance. Six Work Activities were updated and submitted for EHS collaboration as part of the annual renewal/approval process. Assisted Protective Services personnel on their biannual fire inspection of Building 70. All lab areas in the building were checked. Distributed the new secondary container chemical labels to ETA lab areas. This will be on-going until we figure out how to best make available. A Safety Alert was distributed regarding requirements for use/storage of flammable gases in lab areas. The Building 90 second floor hallway storage cabinets were inspected. A few minor items are being removed for disposal. The quarterly SAA hazardous waste inspections were completed in Buildings 62 and 70. Overall, these went well.
Short Term Safety Outlook 1/17 • • Complete the Oven/Furnace Self Assessment and prepare the final report. Many of the Level 2 and Level 3 Work Activities are due for semiannual/annual renewal over the next 3 months. Continue follow-up on the list of open “Failed” and “Conditionally Accepted” electrical equipment items. Follow-up on items identified from the B 70 fire inspection. Start the Telecommuter Ergonomic Self-Assessment project. We will be working in conjunction with several other divisions. Develop a work plan to address recommendations from the recent OIC “Ensuring Safety in Research” report. Implement EHS 0027 "Safety Walkthrough" training for ETA managers and interested Lab Safety Leads. Ensure the new PSD 0135 “General Emergency Preparedness” course is completed by ETA personnel once it becomes required in mid-February.
