ESTAR To talk about location
ESTAR �Estar means “to be”. �It is used to talk about condition, location, and feelings. �Estar is an irregular verb! �It is not conjugated the same way as regular –ar verbs.
Conjugating Estar Singular Plural 1 st person Yo estoy – I am Nosotros estamos – We are 2 nd person Tú estás – You (fam. ) are Vosotros estáis – You (fam. pl. ) are 2 nd person Ud. está – You (form. ) are Uds. están – You (form. pl. ) are 3 rd person El está – He / It is Ellos están – They are 3 rd person Ella está– She / It is Ellas están – They are • Notice that the “yo” form ends in –oy • All forms except “nosotros” have an accent mark over the “a”. • El/ella mean “it” but pay attention to the gender of the noun!
Ejemplos �Yo estoy en la clase de español. I am in Spanish class. �María y José están en la clase de ciencias sociales. Mary and Joseph are in Social Studies class. �El reloj está al lado de la ventana. The clock is beside the window. �¿Dónde esta la puerta? Where is the door? �Los pupitres están delante del escritorio. The students’ desks are in front of the teacher’s desk.
