Outline Introduction Providing Structure Clarifying Norms Building Cohesiveness Promoting Standards of Excellence Case Study
What makes a constructive environment for any kind of group ?
Providing Structure • Providing a structure is like giving group members architectural blueprint for their work • Helps to understand where everyone fits and the goals they need to accomplish • This helps team members to acknowledge the current and future demands
Clarifying Norms After structuring the group, clarifying norms is the next step done by the leader Simply, norms are the rules of behavior that are established and shared by group members Each group member should behave in a certain manner to develop healthy environment
Building Cohesiveness After structuring and applying norms to the group, the leader should build cohesiveness to te work place. It is described as a sense of “we-mess”, the cement that holds a group together What does a group feel when they are cohesive.
Promoting Standards of Excellence Finally, the fourth step, in order for the leader to accomplish a constructive climate, they should promote standards of excellence. The standards of excellence are expressed by enhancing the expectation for performance that exist within a group or an organization To influence performance, the leader must stress the “three Rs”: Require results, Review results, and Reward results.
Case Study 8. 1: A tale of two classes Introduction This case study discusses Ahmed Claire experience when attending two different communication classes back-to-back in the same room. In this study, we observe the different leadership styles provided by each class teacher. Background The first class is taught by Steven Gardner, in which his norm is some strict rules. The other class is taught by Marissa Morgan, in which she her only norm is that there are no rules. There were many issues about Professor Morgan’s way of teaching and they way she leads the class. The issues were said by Ian, a student of both classes that was interviewed by Ebony, which is also similar to Ebony’s opinion It is assumed that the main issue behind Professor Morgan’s teaching is its norm, as there is no specific content to follow

Case Study 8. 1: A tale of two classes Proposed Solutions The solution of this issue is that Professor Morgan should add some limits to the student’s actions, and that some rules should be applied to control the students. However, this doesn’t mean the she will have to change her teaching methods. This could be the best solution to maintain her teaching assessments as well as assuring that each and every student is familiar with what is happening. This solution will definitely work as Professor Gardner has claimed that adding rules will get the student to be on board with the direction the train is going from the start. Recommendations Since Professor Morgan looks more into freedom, she can still allow her students to do whatever they like, but under permission and only if it relates to the course material
