CARBOHYDRATES • A group of compounds that serve as energy • 2 Types Simple or simple sugars Complex or starches • Comes from grains, dairy, fruits, candy, etc. • Provides energy and produces glucose
FATS • Oily compounds that serve as a reserve energy source • 3 types • Trans fat = bad fat, raises cholesterol and risk of heart disease • Saturated = Found in meat and dairy, raises blood pressure • Unsaturated = good fat, found in plant food and fish • Comes from meat, dairy, and oil
PROTEIN • Compounds that replaces and maintains tissues • Makes up muscles, organs, and immune system • Used to make hemoglobin that carries oxygen • Comes from meat, fish, dairy, grains, and beans
FIBER • Carbohydrates that cannot be digested • 2 types – Soluble: dissolves in water and lowers cholestero. I Insoluble: does not dissolve, helps with constipation • Makes us feel full, and has no calories • Comes from grains, fruits, and vegetables
VITAMINS • Substances that help us grow and function • 2 types - Fat soluble=vitamins are stored in fat - Water soluble=vitamins travel through bloodstream and comes out in urine • Comes from vegetables, fruit, dairy, meat, grains
MINERALS • Substances that help your body stay healthy • 2 types – Macrominerals: Lots needed – Trace minerals: not as much needed • Comes from fruits, vegetables, grains, meat, dairy
WATER • • • Essential liquid for survival Only 1 type Makes up about half of body weight Helps digest food, and get rid of waste Can’t survive over a couple of days without it Comes from fruits, vegetables, and meat
