• The first stage in this process is to create a spider diagram showing your personal interests My interests Secondly, link these with potential career options: INTEREST POSSIBLE CAREER e. g. PATHWAY Languages Teacher Translator
Developing Career Pathways • Visit the website: http: //www. careerswales. com/en/your-career/careerplus/ Log in and use the Career + tool to create your profile. This will allow you to research your ideas further. Evidence: you need to produce an A 4 sheet stating what two career pathways you have chosen and why.
You need to develop your two chosen career paths further. You must look at: • • Specific skills required for these pathways Desirable attributes Requirements linked to experience Qualifications needed
Key Words Skill A quality or feature regarded as a characteristic or inherent part of someone or something. You will need to produce two detailed reports on what your two chosen pathways require. Discuss this example of a languages teacher before embarking upon your own.
Specific Skills The specific skills required to be a secondary school teacher depends on the subject you decide to specialise in. For example, my preference would be to teach Modern Foreign languages. Therefore, I would need to have specific skills in the languages that I would like to teach. A further skill that is essential for teaching is organisation and a commitment to the job. To be a secondary school teacher I will also need excellent communication skills and the ability to inspire and motivate the pupils to learn.
Attributes My research has shown that the attributes I will need if I am to become a secondary school teacher are: • enthusiasm for the subject • the ability to develop good working relationships with a wide range of people • the ability to work in a team as well as use my own initiative • excellent creative ideas to inspire children • good organisational and time-management • the ability to manage classes and deal with challenging behaviour • excellent communication skills • patience and a good sense of humour.
Experience There is no specific experience needed in order to become a secondary school teacher although voluntary experience would be of benefit.
Qualifications required There are different routes that can be taken to become a secondary school teacher. One of these is Initial Teacher Education or Training (ITET) and gain Qualified Teacher Status (QTS). These can be by university-led training through an undergraduate degree or postgraduate award or school-led work-based training. For all of these routes, you will need: • GCSEs (A*-C) in English and maths (and science, depending on your teaching subject) or equivalent qualifications • passes (before starting ITET) in numeracy and literacy skills tests • Enhanced background checks by the Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) - formerly the Criminal Records Bureau.
Contact with employer You are required to make direct contact with employers to enquire about their requirements. Action plan: • Research potential employers to contact • How are you going to contact them? • What questions are you going to ask?
Plenary • In pairs, critically analyse each other action plan regarding contacting an employer for your chosen career pathways. Provide detailed feedback to your partner.
