What is ESOL? ESOL stands for English for Speakers of Other Languages. ESOL program

What is ESOL? ESOL stands for English for Speakers of Other Languages. ESOL program identifies and serves the linguistic and academic needs of students who enter our school with limited English proficiency. Every student is entitled to an equal education regardless of their national origin, English proficiency, or immigration status.

How are ESOL students identified? Home language survey - asks parents to identify any

Home language survey - asks parents to identify any language other than English that: 1. was first learned by the student 2. is spoken most often by the student 3. is spoken most often in the student’s home If a language other than English – student is tested Based on the results of testing students are either served or monitored.

It is not simple or easy for children to learn a second language. English is a difficult language to learn. It takes – 1 -3 years for conversational skills to develop. It takes 5 -7 years to understand academic language. (textbooks, scientific language, state test)
