Safety Features of NSLS-II Insertion Devices • Various safety features have been implemented for all IDs: • Brakes in motors – Brakes are on when there is no power • Self-locking gears – Gap will not close by attractive force only (EPU) • Pilot lamp during gap/phase motion (EPU) – Warns people in the vicinity of the device that it is in motion • Lexan cover for magnetic gaps and external pinch points (EPU) – Covers from both inner and outer side of a device. • LOTO procedures during maintenance – Written procedure for each type of the device for lock-out 12 BROOKHAVEN SCIENCE
EPS Switch For EPU • • A mechanical switch on the EPU independent from control system for “gap open” status has integrated into EPS 3 PW is not tied-in to EPS • Low power device doesn’t have the potential to damage equipment 13 BROOKHAVEN SCIENCE
Front End Details • • A front end delivers the photon beam to the beamline while controlling the sizes of both the synchrotron and bremsstrahlung radiation fans. The fixed mask shadows the vacuum chambers of downstream collimators and safety shutters for beam deviations controlled by active interlock. Lead collimators trim the Bremsstrahlung fan exiting to beamlines. Photon shutter is used to stop the photon beam in order to protect the uncooled safety shutters. The safety shutters block the bremsstrahlung radiation from exiting through the ratchet wall collimator chamber opening. The photon shutter & safety shutters are locked out. (Centrally controlled LOTO) ESM is same design as NSLS-II Project, ABBIX, & other NEXT front ends 14 BMM is same design as XFP & CMS, which does contain BROOKHAVEN SCIENCE
Major Differences in BM front ends • • • Mirror located in front end (beamline component; not all BM FEs) Additional gate valves to isolate mirror Additional fixed masks to shadow collimators Additional shadow shield for line of sight Slits contain current measuring devices (same x-y stage) Larger aperture Beryllium window isolates SR & BL vacuum (not all BM FEs) Fixed masks, slits, & photon shutter are Cu-Cr-Zr instead of Glidcop New safety shutter design Different diagnostic flag (beamline component; not all 15 BROOKHAVEN SCIENCE

Radiation Safety & Top-Off • • Radiation safety components: • • • Fixed masks (all) Burn through #1 & #2 (ESM only) Collimator #1 & #2 shielding Side shadow shield (BMM only) Safety shutter #1 & #2 shielding Ratchet wall collimator shielding Top-Off components: • • • Exit absorber Fixed mask #1 Collimator #2 (ESM only) Credited controls include all shielding & PPS components Removal or modification of any device under 18 configuration control requires an approved PS safety BROOKHAVEN SCIENCE
