Ernest Hemingway • born on July 22 in 1899 in Illinois • raised by his parents Clarence and Grace Hemingway • lived together in the suburb of Chicago (rather conservative at that time) • spent a lot of time in a cabin situated in Northern Michigan, where he learnt how to hunt and fish and his great love of wildlife was born • during his high school studies, he worked on school newspapers called Trapeze and Tabula, where he was primarily interested in sports 1

Army experience • during the WWI Hemingway joined the Italian army as a volunteer • served as an ambulance driver • soon after joining the army he was seriously wounded • he was transported to hospital in Milan, where he had a romantic affair with Agnes von Kurowsky • she agreed to get married to him but later left him for another man, which deeply hurt his feelings • inspiration for his great novel A Farewell to Arms

A great author and his last years • Hemingway became addicted to alcohol • his heavy drinking habit worsened his mental and physical health • suffered from severe depression and mood swings • was treated with electric shocks • in the morning of July 2 in 1961, he woke up early and committed suicide
