Brief bio
Stage 1: Oral Stage • Trust vs. Mistrust • Trust: basic faith in one’s providers; sense that others are reliable and dependable • Mistrust: feeling that the parent is unpredictable and unreliable; may not be there when needed • Hope: the expectation that despite frustrations, rages, and disappointments, good things will happen in the future
Stage 2: Anal Stage • Autonomy vs. Shame and Doubt • Shame: feeling that one does not look good in others’ eyes • Doubt: stems from realization that one is not so powerful – that others can control one and perform actions much better • Will: the unbroken determination to exercise free choice as well as self restraint
Stage 3: Phallic/Oedipal Stage • Initiative vs. Guilt • Purpose: courage to pursue valued goals – unimpaired by guilt and inhibition
Stage 4: Latency Stage • Industry vs. Inferiority • Competence: the free exercise of intelligence and skill in the completion of tasks, unimpaired by excessive feelings of inferiority
Stage 5: Puberty/Genital Stage • Identity vs. Role Confusion • Psychosocial moratorium: time out period to find oneself • Identity foreclosure: premature acceptance of compartmentalized social roles • Fidelity: the ability to sustain one’s freely pledged loyalties
Stage 6: Young Adulthood • Intimacy: only possible once a reasonable sense of identity has been established • Isolation: fails to attain genuine mutuality • Love: mutuality of devotion forever subduing the antagonisms
Adulthood • Generativity vs. Self Absorption and Stagnation • Generativity: not only the creation of children but also the productions of things and ideas through work
Old Age • Ego integrity vs. despair • Ego integrity: sense that there is order to one’s life – acceptance of one’s one and only life cycle • Wisdom: reflects a thoughtful, hopeful effort to find the value and meaning of life in the face of death
