Internet 2 Mission = University Corporation for Advanced Internet Development
Internet 2 Innovation Program Abundant Bandwidth 100 G Networking Open Up the Network Stack Software Defined Networking Friction-Free Science = Science DMZ
Where does Innovation Happen? • National Network – 15, 000+ Route Miles of Dark Fiber – 100 G – Enabled by SDN • Campus and Regional Networks – GENI – NSF CC-NIE / CC-IIE Program – etc.
• Event/Date What will global innovators do with the next Innovation Platform? • Presenter, Presenter. Title, Internet 2 Title or Title
This is what we have been able to say for about 1. 5 years: The 100 G testbed of innovation for tomorrow’s Internet is available nationwide, right now.
• • • 100 G Nationwide Backbone Native Open. Flow w/ virtual slices (In Progress) Multivendor Environment Available at Public Peering Points Full Year of solid production experience • Open for controlled experimentation • • 8 – 1/17/2022, © 2013 Internet 2 Provides production & innovation platform to: • Dozens of high performance compute clusters • Hundreds of campus data centers • Thousands of native Open. Flow ports • Hundreds of wireless access networks • Millions of potential collaborators
Does this create a platform for innovation? Abundant bandwidth to enable innovation? Programmability to encourage application innovation? Support data intensive science? TODAY

AL 2 S Today: From a GENI Perspective • 100 G • SDN Substrate • Reachable by Campuses – Peered with ION at Layer 2 via IDCP – More and more campuses connected (directly or indirectly) • Connected to GENI Mesoscale – ION does the same • FOAM Aggregate Manager
AL 2 S Today: GENI L 2 Circuits on Internet 2 • Internet 2 ION Service – Built as a MPLS overlay on top of Internet 2 Advanced Layer 3 Service – Dynamic circuits can be created through: • ION UI • OSCARS API • MAX Aggregate Manager – Supports GENI stitching • Internet 2 Advanced Layer 2 Service (AL 2 S) – Built as a “pure Open. Flow” circuit service – Dynamic circuits can be created through: • OESS UI • OESS API (web services/REST) • OESS Aggregate Manager (FOAM-based) – GENI stitching support: in progress
AL 2 S Tomorrow: From a GENI Perspective • Flow. Space Firewall 1. 0. 1 is ready – http: //globalnoc. iu. edu/sdn/fsf. html – (Will be posted later this week) – Supports one definition of network virtualization • What are the obstacles to deploying network virtualization? – Policy / process discussions underway – Don’t break the production network • Average IPv 6 Load is roughly 3 G per second • Total Aggregate Load on R&E Network is roughly 60 G / sec • Conclusion: IPv 6 is 5% of Production Traffic – Does not include TR-CPS
AL 2 S Tomorrow: Policy / Process Rough Outline • What are you doing? • Application Constraints – – – VLAN Range Constraints on number of flow rules Constraints on rate of flow rule insertion Constraints on rate of Packet-In/Packet-Out events Etc. • Test on i. DREAM GENI test lab • Test on NDDI • Roll out on AL 2 S
AL 2 S: Network Virtualization Deployment • Original idea: Roll out with support for L 2/L 3 Matching – Makes it “interesting” • Problem: We also need to support IPv 6 on production network – Vendor fix in progress • 3 General Approaches – Slow Roll: Timely vendor fix while we begin testing process – Single Vendor: Complicate implementation so one vendor “vanishes” – Limited Matching: Roll out with support for Layer 2 Matching only
AL 2 S: Network Virtualization Deployment • Original idea: Roll out with support for L 2/L 3 Matching – Makes it “interesting” • Problem: We also need to support IPv 6 on production network – Vendor fix in progress • 3 General Approaches – Slow Roll: Timely vendor fix while we begin testing process – Single Vendor: Complicate implementation so one vendor “vanishes” – Limited Matching: Roll out with support for Layer 2 Matching only • We are ready to entertain the first few requests – innovation@internet 2. edu
AL 2 S Tomorrow: From a GENI Perspective • FOAM Aggregate Manager is deployed • What are the obstacles to deploying dynamic stitching? – OESS development requirement identified • Support Remote link ID – FOAM development requirement identified • Modify FOAM to respond to stitching request RSPECs • Expected delivery before next GEC
FOAM on AL 2 S • Provides a GENI interface to OESS – FOAM takes GENI AM API requests and translates them into OESS API requests • FOAM modified to support OESS API – Advertises available AL 2 S/OESS resources (endpoints, trunks) – Receives requests for AL 2 S/OESS circuit creation/removal, talks to AL 2 S OESS to make change to network • • • Initial work in early 2013 Implementation / initial testing through Sept 2013 Deployed on AL 2 S prior to GEC 18 Additional testing of cross-connects to ION tested prior to GEC 19 Work in progress to support GENI Stitching with AL 2 S/OESS FOAM
