Ergonomics n n Ergonomics comes from the Greek word ERGO – “work” and NOMOS – “ laws” Ergonomics is the study of workers’ interaction with their working envionrment
Why Do We Need To Study Ergonomics n n It is important to know and study ergonomics so that when you are in a work setting you can be comfortable and injury-free. It is also important for employers to provide employees with a safe and healthy work environment so that they are more efficient and productive.
Most Common Ergonomic Related Injuries n n n Repetitive strain injuries and musculo-skeletal injuries – this is when a person performs the same task over and over, damaging nerves, muscle, tendons and other body tissue. The most common MSI is carpal tunnel syndrome. Other injuries are eyestrain, headaches, fatigue, backache, poor circulation and allergies.
Work Environment To minimize the possibility of injury when working: n n n n Room that is between 15 -22ºC. Plenty of air circulation. Clean work area. Lots of light and workroom should be neutral and soft. Chairs should have 5 legs for stability, adjustable and have a firm back. Lots of space to work Monitors should have flat, anti-glare screens and at eye level. Keyboard should be placed at elbow height, and at an angle that cause the fingers to land on the home row where elbows are at a 90º elbow angle.
