Ergonomics & Anthropometrics Learning Objectives By the end of this lesson you will have developed a knowledge and understanding of: • the terms ‘ergonomics’ and ‘anthropometrics’ • the use of ergonomics and anthropometrics when designing
Ergonomics • The scientific study of how equipment and systems can best match human abilities and characteristics • It considers the human usage of design, focusing on the objects which people use, their environment, and their activities.
Ergonomics as part of the design process When the use of ergonomics is part of the design process the product is: • easier to use • feels comfortable both physically and psychologically • is safer when the human interacts with the product • provides a greater level of comfort for the user or operator when in use • is more likely to be better suited to the majority of people • will appear to be at one with the environment.
Anthropometrics as part of ergonomics • Anthropometrics is the gathering of data to find common patterns in people’s size.
Anthropometrics as part of ergonomics • It generally has data relating to 90% of the users. The 5% at the extremes are often highlighted or even left out.

Task • Draw a table like the one below: Lower Leg Person 1 Person 2 Person 3 Average AQA GCSE Design and Technology: graphic products Upper Leg Width Back
Task • You are to design a simple chair – Sketch your design in isometric – Measure 3 people and record your results on the table • • Lower leg Upper leg Width Back height – Average the measurements – Add the appropriate dimensions to your chair
