Talking about addictions… What does ‘addiction’ mean?

Addiction is a complex disease, often chronic in nature, which affects the functioning of the brain and body. It also causes serious damage to families, relationships, schools, workplaces and neighborhoods.

What is drug? A drug is any substance which, when taken into the body, alters the body’s function either physically and/or psychologically. What is alcohol? A mixture of ethanol and water that is usually 95% ethanol.

What are the effects of drugs and alcohol? The effects vary from person to person depending on people’s characteristics, the type of drug and alcohol and how they are taken, the enviroment a person is in when using them. Some people become depressed, angry, agressive, sleepy, unmotivated, paranoid, anxious or talkative.

Drugs and alcohol are dangerous Consequences—Researchers estimate that each year: • 1, 825 college students between the ages of 18 and 24 die from alcohol-related unintentional injuries, including motor-vehicle crashes. • 696, 000 students between the ages of 18 and 24 are assaulted by another student who has been drinking. • About 1 in 4 college students report academic consequences from drinking, including missing class, falling behind in class, doing poorly on exams or papers, and receiving lower grades overall.

Alcohol use report: Alcohol and College Students (2015) Prevalence of Alcohol Use: • Prevalence of Drinking: 58% of full-time college students ages 16– 22 drank alcohol in the past month compared with 48. 2% of other persons of the same age. • Prevalence of Binge Drinking: 37. 9% of college students ages 16– 22 reported binge drinking in the past month compared with 32. 6% of other persons of the same age. • Prevalence of Heavy Alcohol Use: 12. 5% of college students ages 16– 22 reported heavy alcohol use in the past month compared with 8. 5% of other persons of the same age.
