ER VERB SPELLING CHANGES
ER VERB SPELLING CHANGES Objective: - Learn/Review how some regular -er verbs have spelling changes before the endings in certain forms. - Learn/Review when & how to make the changes.
Some regular French –er verbs have spelling changes in certain forms of the verb.
Some of these changes have to do with keeping a “g” or “c” soft before the “-ons” ending of the “nous” form: - nager: Je nage. / Nous nageons. - manger: Je mange. / Nous mangeons. - commencer: Je commence. Nous commençons.
(It occurs only in the “nous” form, because every other ending begins with an “e. ”) Je mange Nous mangeons Tu manges Vous mangez Il mange Ils mangent
Other spelling changes have to do with pronunciation & silent endings. They include: - doubling the consonant before the ending. - adding an “accent grave” on the e (è) before the ending. - changing a “y” to “i” before the ending.
These changes occur in the “boot” forms of the verbs. (The nous & vous forms remain the same as the infinitive. ) Ex: Appeler J’appelle Nous appelons Tu appelles Vous appelez Il appelles Ils appellent
Other examples of doubling the consonant: - jeter: Je jette - rappeler: Tu rappelles - épeler: Il épelle
Another change is to put an “accent grave” on the e before the ending. (This change occurs with many “-e + consonant + er” verbs. ) Ex: Acheter J’achète Tu achètes Il achète Nous achetons Vous achetez Ils achètent
Other examples of adding a grave accent to the e before the ending: - préférer: Je préfère - répéter: Tu répètes - promener: Il promène
The last change is to change the “y” to “i” in the “boot forms” of verbs ending in –oyer and –ayer. (Again, the nous & vous forms stay the same as the infinitive. ) Ex: Nettoyer Je nettoie Nous nettoyons Tu nettoies Vous nettoyez Il nettoie Ils nettoient
Other examples of changing the “y” to “i”: - envoyer: J’envoie - essayer: Tu essaies - payer: Il paie
Maintenant, à vous … How would you conjugate: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. 8. jeter: Je ______ répéter: Tu ______ payer: Je ______ payer: Vous _____ nettoyer: Ils ______ rappeler: Elle ______ essayer: On ______ promener: Nous ______
Did we achieve the objective? Do you understand when and how to make spelling changes in the –er verbs we talked about?
