The Mile Coda and Nigel ran a mile at PE yesterday. Coda claims that he ran more than Nigel disagrees with Coda ran 1/2 of a mile Nigel ran 4/8 of a mile. Nigel argues that they ran the same distance. Who is correct? Turn and discuss with your table group.
Let’s Prove our Thinking If you said they ran the same distance, you are correct. Let’s prove that Coda and Nigel ran the same distance. In other words, 1/2 = 4/8. Pretend that the paper strip represents the whole mile. Fold the strip in half and label. Now fold it again to create four equal parts and label. Fold again to create 8 equal parts and label. Notice that 1/2 and 4/8 represent the exact same distance.

CAN YOU THINK OF A RULE FOR FINDING EQUIVALENT FRACTIONS? *Discuss this question with your group. *What patterns have you seen in equivalent fractions so far? *Write a rule on how to find an equivalent fraction at your table.
HOW CAN YOU FIND EQUIVALENT FRACTIONS? Two Ways! Multiplying Dividing 2 x =4 2 4 x 8 2÷ 2 1 = 4÷ 2 2 You can multiply the numerator and the denominator by the same number. You can ALWAYS use multiplication to find equivalent fractions! You can divide the numerator and the denominator by the same number. You can ONLY use division to find equivalent fractions when the numerator and denominator have a 2
