Equipment Cleaning and Decontamination • Decontamination is a process which removes or destroys microbial contamination from medical equipment and the environment. • Differing levels of decontamination are used depending on the device and the procedure involved. • The levels of decontamination are: – Cleaning – removes contamination but does not kill micro-organisms – Disinfection – kills many but not all microorganisms – Sterilization – kills nearly all microorganisms
