What an Artist Statement is NOT • Don’t write a statement about your role

What an Artist Statement is NOT • Don’t write a statement about your role in the world • No clichés about your work and views • Don’t be too Technical • No discussion about materials/ techniques • Not poetic • No discussions on childhood/family or personal life unless it’s relevant to your work • No bragging

I create art to express my interest in illustrating the flaw of mankind and the impact on our environment. I strive to increase awareness on the issue of pollution, and the devastating impact it can have on our oceans. Through a variety of pieces, I accurately depict ocean pollution in hopes of demonstrating to my audience the vital role they can play in saving our planet. One of the more challenging aspects is attempting to illustrate how our daily actions, although seemingly ordinary, can have damaging consequences.

Taking Photos • You want to take nice, professional looking photographs for your portfolio • This way, others can get the full effect of your work without having to see the original. • Important to have: • A well lit area • A camera with auto focus • A tripod or a steady hand

Taking Photos • If using a tripod, it should be set at the same height as the center of your artwork • Position the camera with some distance from your art, and then you can adjust the zoom lens as needed • Avoid shadows and messy framing and make sure it’s level against the wall • If your artwork is 3 D, keep the background simple • Take multiple shots- experiment with light and angles • Fill the frame with your work, try not to show a background • If a background is inevitable, make it a neutral colour, like white
