Epithelial. Tissue. Foldable POGIL Epithelial

Epithelial Tissue POGIL Simple cuboidal Simple columnar 1. All of the diagrams represent a type of Stratified cuboidal tissue called epithelial tissue. What characteristics does each type of epithelial tissue share? Stratified columnar Simple squamous Stratified squamous 1

Epithelial Tissue POGIL Simple cuboidal Simple columnar 2. The starred portion of each diagram Stratified cuboidal represents something called the basement membrane, whereas the blue cells are epithelial cells. What is a basement? Why Stratified columnar do you think the term “basement membrane” is used to describe the tissue? Simple squamous Stratified squamous 2

Epithelial Tissue POGIL 3. Look at the diagrams and come up with a definition of epithelial tissue. basement membrane epithelial tissue su rf ac e lumen basement membrane lumen 3

Column 1 Simple cuboidal Simple columnar Column 2 4. What is the Stratified cuboidal difference between the epithelial tissue in the first column and the epithelial tissue in 1 the second column? 5. What do you think Stratified columnar the roots “simple” and “strat” mean? Simple squamous Stratified squamous 4

Row 1 Simple cuboidal Row 2 Simple columnar Row 3 6. As you have seen before, epithelial tissue is named for if it Stratified cuboidal is single or multilayered. Look at the rows of diagrams. In addition to being named for layers, Stratified columnar what else is a feature used in naming epithelial tissue? Simple squamous Stratified squamous 5

Row 1 Simple cuboidal Row 2 Simple columnar Row 3 7. What shape are cuboidal cells? What about columnar cells? Stratified cuboidal 8. The root “squam” means scale. Do you think squamous is a good name for the type of epithelial Stratified columnar tissue shown in row three? Explain your answer. Simple squamous Stratified squamous 6

Simple columnar Stratified columnar Pseudostratified columnar 9. Come up with a definition for pseudo stratified columnar epithelial tissue. 7

Simple columnar Stratified columnar Pseudostratified columnar 10. A pseudonym is a false name. Sometimes famous actors use pseudonyms when they make reservations so that they can stay incognito. Pseudoscience describes things that masquerade as science that are not really science. For example, astrology (horoscopes, etc. ) is a pseudoscience. The root pseudo means false. Why is this a good root to describe pseudo stratified columnar epithelium? 8

Name that Epithelial Tissue 11. Is the epithelial tissue below simple or stratified? What shape would you say the cells are? 9

Name that Epithelial Tissue 12. Is the epithelial tissue below simple or stratified? What shape would you say the cells are? lumen t n e m e s a b 10

Name that Epithelial Tissue 13. Is the epithelial tissue below simple or stratified? What shape would you say the cells are? surface basement membrane 11

Name that Epithelial Tissue 14. Is the epithelial tissue below simple or stratified? What shape would you say the cells are? 12

Column 1 Simple cuboidal Simple columnar Column 2 15. The type of epithelial tissue present is based on the needs of the organ. For example, the alveoli in the lungs (tiny air sacs) Stratified cuboidal are composed of simple squamous epithelium while the skin, lining of the mouth, anus, and vagina is composed of stratified squamous Stratified columnar epithelium. Why do you think alveoli need to have simple squamous epithelium while skin needs stratified? Simple squamous Stratified squamous 13
